Sean loved the old house; the only thing that bothered him was the popcorn ceiling that had become yellow with age. He wanted to have it removed but knew that he would have to convince his parents about it first. To do this, he took them to a home improvement store nearby where the attendant showed them the new ceiling treatments that were available in the market. The next day Sean could hear his parents talking in their room in hushed tones. As he sat to eat his breakfast, his mother entered and put the brochure on the table and said

"This is what your father and I would like in place of the popcorn ceiling, I hope you like it too? If you don’t, you can decide what will look good!" Popcorn Ceiling – What is a it? Basically, popcorn ceiling is a term that is used for a spray-on or paint-on acoustic treatment that was often used in American residential construction in the 1960′s and 1970′s. The popcorn ceiling has a cottage cheese texture and was previously used to cover poor workmanship in the attachment and taping of the drywall and also helped eliminate reflected sound and echoes. It was in the late 1970′s that asbestos was banned which also affected popcorn ceilings as they contained asbestos. Popcorn Ceiling Removal Some of the things you will require to remove a popcorn ceiling are:

  • Some Drywall Sandpaper
  • A Few Dry Cloths
  • Some Clear Plastic Sheeting
  • A Joint Knife
  • Some Drywall Joint Compound
  • A Spray Bottle Filled With Water

The steps that will help you remove the popcorn ceiling have been listed below:

  • First of all remove all the furniture from the room and then place plastic or drop cloths on the floor. This is done in order to protect the floor and catch the mess.
  • Now remove all the light fixtures (especially the ones on the ceiling). Tape the ones on the floor too, to ensure that water does not drip into them. Following this step will ensure that there is no accidental damage.

  • Now set up a ladder exactly where you want to begin the work and using the sprayer, spray water on parts of the ceiling. Wet the area again if the popcorn ceiling is difficult to remove.
  • Once that is done, select a drywall joint knife of the broadest width and use it to scrape the ceiling.
  • Keep on with this action until you have removed all the texture.
  • To end the process, wait for the ceilings to dry and then sand the entire area using a sheet of medium-grit sandpaper. Use a fine-grit drywall sandpaper for the second sanding.
  • After you have proceeded with all the steps, inspect the ceiling closely and fill any gouges or rough spots with drywall joint compound. Allow the compound to dry before sandpapering.

After you have removed the popcorn ceiling you can opt for other home improvement options available. Popcorn Ceiling Removal Tips ceilings-tiles

Wait for the results before beginning the project because it is advisable to ask a certified asbestos removal contractor to remove the ceiling in the presence of asbestos.
  • While removing the popcorn ceiling, wear some old clothes, a hat, goggles and a dust mask.
  • In case you are planning to re-texture the ceiling, you need not implement the final phase of the steps.

Home Improvements with Tin Ceiling Tiles

Tin ceiling tiles are making a come back these days in home dcor. If you are thinking of making home improvements using tin ceiling tiles, here are a few ideas.

ceilings-1

buy ceiling tiles Are you getting tired of your stained and drab old ceiling? Why not go in for one of the latest trends in home improvements these days, and replace your old ceiling with tin ceiling tiles. Not only are they attractive but you do not have to go to the expense of hiring somebody else for the job, since tin ceilings are easy to install and can be a DIY job.

A Peek into the History of Tin Ceiling Tiles Actually tin ceilings are not a new idea but have been around since the mid 19th century, when they were indeed an innovative idea. In those days, tin ceilings were used by the middle class of America as an answer to the decorative plaster ceilings, which the wealthy Europeans used heavily. Tin ceiling tiles at that time were mass produced easily, easy and light to work with, had intricately detailed designs, and were superior to plaster in several ways. These embossed tin panels were used to cover the ceilings of , hotels, businesses and homes. That trend in tin ceiling tiles topped out in the 1890s, after which much of that ornamentation was covered up with acoustic drop-ceiling tiles or drywall. It was much later when experts in restoration began returning homes to their previous grandeur that the preserved tin ceiling tiles were again uncovered. Although some of them needed a certain amount of repainting, stripping, or mending, much of the old tin ceiling tiles did manage to withstand the ravages of time and mishandling far better than was expected.

Renewed Interest in Tin Ceiling Tiles Today These days, tin ceiling tiles are back in fashion, making a considerable come back in home dcor. Remodelers are being swamped with the demand of homeowners for tin ceilings for their home improvement projects. Builders are using tin ceilings as a sales incentive in many of their new models of homes. Designers too are greeting this new trend in tin ceiling tiles with great enthusiasm. Many companies have started recreating tin ceiling tiles in the same patterns that were popular in the past with renewed interest. This nostalgic yearning for that era of America has made it possible for antique, copper and silver finishes of those old designs in tin ceiling tiles along with customized designs to suit the modern home dcor trends of today. Many of the designers of today still continue to paint tin ceilings in white to make it look like plaster, however, the original tin look is catching on now, since many people want to emulate the style of the 1800s in the tin ceiling tiles they are using for their home improvements. If you are going in for home improvements, and are looking for tin ceiling tiles, here are some tips for choosing them:

Tin Ceiling Tiles come in many Designs: Instead of using the lightweight grayish colored aluminum or economy tin, it is a better idea to go in for the unfinished tin panels, which are made with bright tin plated panels that are steel stamped. Tin ceiling tiles are available in various types, colors and patterns. As far as colors are concerned, you get tin ceiling tiles in golds, blacks, silvers, rusts, burgundies, coppers, mochas, bronzes and whites. There are several styles too to choose from which can be nailed up, snap locked, dropped in, and moldings. If you use unfinished tiles, you can paint them according to your choice of colors, or if you do choose colored tine tiles, you can use a clear polyurethane coating as a protective cover. When using tiles that can be snap locked, they can be anchored directly to a drywall ceiling using 6 drywall screws. Using Backsplash Tin Ceiling Tiles: Backsplash tin ceiling tiles are growing in popularity for kitchens and bathrooms. Tiles that have the six-pattern style are more appropriate for creating a backsplash effect, although 12-pattern tiles are also used. These tiles have to be nailed up rather than being snap locked. Using Colored Tin Ceiling Tiles Appropriately: Using light colored tin ceiling tiles in a room that has a low ceiling helps to reduce the low-ceilinged look. If you are planning on renovating your bathroom’s ceiling with tin ceiling tiles, you can go in for bolder colors. Burgundies and mochas look great in living rooms. Of course, it goes without saying that ultimately it is your personal taste in color as well as the style of interior decoration of your home that will matter most. Tin ceiling tiles can add a fresh touch to an old and stale room without costing too much and with the ability of easy installation.

Installing Suspended Ceilings

Suspended ceilings provide innumerable advantages over the permanent variety. Read on to know about the same and much more… ceilings-tiles I personally feel that ceilings are the most underestimated fixtures of our house. Just because, it does not fall in our line of sight, we falsely get the impression that they do not impact the general feel and mood of the house or the room.

Just walk into the room that has a slightly different ceiling and you will notice the difference. As we know that it is never too late. Thanks to suspended ceilings, the permanent ceilings can be modified with very little expenditure when you do decide to remodel your house. Suspended ceilings come with their own set of advantages. However suspended ceilings are not suitable for every situation. They do make a lot of sense for basements and bathrooms. Also, in case of leaks because of faulty plumbing, having a suspended ceiling as an option rather than pulling down the existing ceiling and redoing everything will not only be far cheaper, you will save a lot of money too. What are Suspended Ceilings The ceilings have been evolving constantly over the years. In the past, ceilings of lath, wooden planks and plaster were very common. Metal ceilings too gained a lot of popularity because they were easy to install and were light weight.

These days, drywall has almost replaced plaster as a preferred material for ceilings. The latest trend now is the use of suspended ceilings Suspended ceilings are hung from the ceiling with the help of metal grids. This in turn creates a cavity between the true ceiling and the suspended ceiling where pipes, wires and ductwork can be installed and worked on if required. How to Install a Suspended Ceiling The main steps involved in installing a suspended ceiling are:

  • Planning
  • Wall angles installation
  • Hanging suspension coils for main tees
  • Installation of main tees
  • Installation of cross tees and cross border tees
  • Installation of ceiling panels

I guess the easiest part of the entire process would be the suspending ceiling tiles bit. Ceiling tiles are available in many varieties and their performance is based on the humidity resistance, acoustics and light resistance that the tiles offer. Suspended Ceiling Treatment With the innumerable advantages that a suspended ceiling offers, there is a small disadvantage. The space between the true ceiling and the suspended ceiling gets very dusty over a period of time. As the dust settles down, it can be seen around the tiles, thereby giving the entire ceiling a very dusty appearance. There are two solutions to the above problem. Either, you can clean the tiles at regular intervals. This is not a very smart idea as it is not only time and money consuming; you will be defeating the entire purpose of a suspended ceiling. The better approach is to seal your suspended ceiling. This process is known as treatment of the suspended ceiling. The entire process is a simple one. If you have an existing suspended ceiling and want to seal it, then take out your tiles and blow away all the dust with a small air blower. Ensure that you are aware as to where the tiles have to go back. Paint the tiles with premium gloss enamel. Spraying would be a better option as this will ensure that the paint gets into all the crevices also. After the paint is all dried up, place the tiles into their position and seal the tiles along its perimeter by using tile caulk. You can smoothen out the caulk with your finger or a damp piece of cloth. Ensure that you have caulked along the perimeters of your walls and ceiling as well.

Suspended Ceiling Hooks Okay, now that you have understood the need and advantages of a suspended ceiling, learnt how to install and treat it; the last step is to make it more beautiful. This is what I love about home improvements. There is always some scope. Suspended ceiling hooks can be used to hang light weight articles from suspended ceilings. They do not require any installation and can be removed or fixed as and when necessary. The larger hooks can be used to hang light weight chandelier or small potted plants. I would like to end this article by quoting Phillip Moffitt who says, ‘A house is a home when it shelters the body and comforts the soul’. Make a home that you want to go to at the end of the day. It is the most important investment of your life and make sure that every detail in your house is carefully planned.
