Installing Suspended Ceilings

Suspended ceilings provide innumerable advantages over the permanent variety. Read on to know about the same and much more… I personally feel that ceilings are the most underestimated fixtures of our house. Just because, it does not fall in our line of sight, we falsely get the impression that they do not impact the general feel and mood of the house or the room.

Just walk into the room that has a slightly different ceiling and you will notice the difference. As we know that it is never too late. Thanks to suspended ceilings, the permanent ceilings can be modified with very little expenditure when you do decide to remodel your house. Suspended ceilings come with their own set of advantages. However suspended ceilings are not suitable for every situation. They do make a lot of sense for basements and bathrooms. Also, in case of leaks because of faulty plumbing, having a suspended ceiling as an option rather than pulling down the existing ceiling and redoing everything will not only be far cheaper, you will save a lot of money too. What are Suspended Ceilings The ceilings have been evolving constantly over the years. In the past, ceilings of lath, wooden planks and plaster were very common. Metal ceilings too gained a lot of popularity because they were easy to install and were light weight.

These days, drywall has almost replaced plaster as a preferred material for ceilings. The latest trend now is the use of suspended ceilings Suspended ceilings are hung from the ceiling with the help of metal grids. This in turn creates a cavity between the true ceiling and the suspended ceiling where pipes, wires and ductwork can be installed and worked on if required. How to Install a Suspended Ceiling The main steps involved in installing a suspended ceiling are:

Planning

Wall angles installation

Hanging suspension coils for main tees

Installation of main tees

Installation of cross tees and cross border tees

Installation of ceiling panels

I guess the easiest part of the entire process would be the suspending ceiling tiles bit. Ceiling tiles are available in many varieties and their performance is based on the humidity resistance, acoustics and light resistance that the tiles offer. Suspended Ceiling Treatment With the innumerable advantages that a suspended ceiling offers, there is a small disadvantage. The space between the true ceiling and the suspended ceiling gets very dusty over a period of time. As the dust settles down, it can be seen around the tiles, thereby giving the entire ceiling a very dusty appearance. There are two solutions to the above problem. Either, you can clean the tiles at regular intervals. This is not a very smart idea as it is not only time and money consuming; you will be defeating the entire purpose of a suspended ceiling. The better approach is to seal your suspended ceiling. This process is known as treatment of the suspended ceiling. The entire process is a simple one. If you have an existing suspended ceiling and want to seal it, then take out your tiles and blow away all the dust with a small air blower. Ensure that you are aware as to where the tiles have to go back. Paint the tiles with premium gloss enamel. Spraying would be a better option as this will ensure that the paint gets into all the crevices also. After the paint is all dried up, place the tiles into their position and seal the tiles along its perimeter by using tile caulk. You can smoothen out the caulk with your finger or a damp piece of cloth. Ensure that you have caulked along the perimeters of your walls and ceiling as well.

Suspended Ceiling Hooks Okay, now that you have understood the need and advantages of a suspended ceiling, learnt how to install and treat it; the last step is to make it more beautiful. This is what I love about home improvements. There is always some scope. Suspended ceiling hooks can be used to hang light weight articles from suspended ceilings. They do not require any installation and can be removed or fixed as and when necessary. The larger hooks can be used to hang light weight chandelier or small potted plants. I would like to end this article by quoting Phillip Moffitt who says, ‘A house is a home when it shelters the body and comforts the soul’. Make a home that you want to go to at the end of the day. It is the most important investment of your life and make sure that every detail in your house is carefully planned.

Sound absorption relates to the control of sound reflections within a room while sound attenuation is associated with the control of sound transmission between adjacent rooms via a continuous suspended ceiling.

Simplifying The Job But you can get around the worst part of putting in a soundproof ceiling if you can manage to do your work not directly beneath it,

but from the floor of the room just above it. By soundproofing this floor you will stop any noise before it ever gets to your ceiling, and this technique is ideal for use in multi-story buildings like offices and apartments, in which the noise made by the people on one story can disturb those working or living directly below them.

If you’ve ever lived in an apartment with someone living just above you, you probably know how much a soundproof ceiling would have increased your comfort in that situation. If you are living in an apartment now, you might approach your apartment meager about having access to the upstairs unit so that you can soundproof its floor and avoid the hassle of putting a soundproof ceiling in your own unit. Acoustical Ceiling Tiles And Resilient Bars But if soundproofing an upstairs floor is not an option you’ll be faced with the job of installing a soundproof ceiling. In doing so, however, you’ll not only be faced with the physically challenging job of putting up the soundproofing materials; you’ll be reducing the height of the room.

You can simplify your job by deciding to install acoustical ceiling tiles, which will do a moderately good job of preventing noise from bleeding down from above, but for a really soundproof ceiling, you really need to add a new layer to your existing one. You would do this by putting in resilient bars, which are designed to keep your original ceiling separated from the new one. You would first install the resilient bars, and then place your soundproofing materials like rock or mineral wool, and American mass loaded vinyl into them, before adding the drywall which will be the surface of your new ceiling. While this will be a lengthy and difficult job, it really is the best way you have of creating a soundproof ceiling which can give you the peace and quiet you deserve. Before deciding on the best method of installing a Soundproof ceiling for your home or office, be realistic about your level of expertise, and don’t attempt an installation which is beyond your capabilities. While you’ll have to pay more to have your soundproof ceiling professionally installed, doing so is the best guarantee you have that the job will be done quickly and effectively! When considering what type of drop ceiling to install you need to consider things such as tile size and height of ceiling. Drop ceiling tiles come in a variety of sizes ranging from 24 x 24 inches to 24 x 48 inches. When working with large heights it is recommended that smaller ceiling tiles be used for ease of installation. Ceiling tiles is another option to be considered when remodeling a room. These tiles attach directly to the existing ceiling in your home and can add a luster to room that is hard to match. Ceiling tiles come in a multitude of styles and sizes and with little effort you can find a style that will compliment any room perfectly. These styles are so varied that you can almost think of ceiling tiles in the same manner as floor tiles. In much the same way ceiling tiles can be found that will match almost any flooring such as wood planks or diamond patterns.

Installation of ceiling tiles is easy to understand and easy to do. In most cases you can glue the ceiling tiles directly to you cleaned existing ceiling. With other types of tiles, such as the wood planks, installation will require you to first attach firing strips to the existing ceiling in order to attach the new wood planks. Most companies provide easy to understand step-by-step instructions that walk the user through the installation process. Sometime these instructions are given in a video format that helps the user by being able to actually see the process as it happens. When choosing what style of tile to use it is helpful to visit many of the manufacturers web sites. By visiting these sites you can become familiar with the various styles and patterns that are available. This is better than going to a local retailer first because the retailer may not always carry all the styles that a company will offer. If this is the case then with just the click of a few buttons you can order your new ceiling tiles directly from the company and generally at a discounted price. So remember that when you are planning on remodeling a room don’t forget to consider the ceiling with as much care and planning as you would any other part of the room. An old ceiling redone with new ceiling tiles can help a room to stand out and look its very best.
Suspended Ceilings – Is There Any Need For Them? The idea of a suspended ceiling is to make your premises appear more professional and well suited to a working environment.

If currently, you do not have suspended ceilings and have obscure pipes, wires and ducks from your original ceiling, suspended ceilings will do the job of hiding these mis-fitting obstructions. By hiding these anomalies your ceilings would now appear much more professional and well presented.

The benefits of using suspended ceilings means that they are easy to maintain and look after. They can be demountable, which means the ceilings are incredibly easy to uphold. If in the future you want to change the designs or buy new tiles it will be very easy as you can simply un attach the grids, whereas if they are non – accessible they will be permanently implemented making it harder to change in the future. With demountable tiles you can place lights inside the tiles which hide light bulbs/tubing, making the office of room seem even more professional. With suspended ceilings you are able to have the exact colour and design you wish to choose. With an almost unlimited amount to choose from not including your own designs you can have your ceilings looking the exact part you want. Suspended ceilings are well suited in providing different features that will benefit all needs and requirements people want. One of these benefits is the power of insulation.

Suspended ceilings are made with insulation that helps to prevent heat loss. By creating a gap between the ceiling and the suspended ceiling with insulation placed on top, a cavity if made that traps in warm air. This is very good at a time where energy bills are on the increase. By installing suspended ceilings you undoubtedly save a lot of money in the long term.

By installing suspended ceilings, a touch of professionalism is given that gives you office or room a much better persona through the use of designs, colours and lighting that is used to create the exact look you want. By viewing the extensive range of designs and materials you most certainly find the look you feel best suits your environment. Further benefits of suspended ceilings are their power of sound proofing and sound reduction. By using acoustic panels you can limit the amount of noise produced in almost any environment. This is why suspended ceilings are often used in my office and school, university environments. By cutting the noise level down offices are appear much more quiet, therefore productivity of work increases, which is a must for all companies. From this it is possible to see that there is a multitude of different reasons that can entice you to buy and install suspended ceilings. The ceilings can be used to save money on your heating bills and can be customised to your exact needs. These ceilings can also hid obscure attributes such as pipes and wires, which would give off a more professional look to your office. Finally what I feel is the most important factor is the sound reduction suspended ceilings provide. By having a quieter working environment more work can be done which ultimately is what every company desires in their workforce.

Suspended Ceilings – They Are Getting Popular There are many different types of ceilings out there to choose from when getting a new ceiling fitted,

but there is one that can offer many different benefits and extras that will help you in future maintenance of your ceiling.

The ceiling type that I am talking about is suspended ceilings, read on to find out some of the benefits to these types of ceilings.

Suspended ceilings are false ceilings which are supported by suspended metal grids which are held on from the current existing ceiling joints. Usually, but not always, suspended ceilings are held made demountable so that there is access to the ceiling void above. This is usually created so that occasional maintenance work can be carried out above the ceiling so that it is hidden from view, this is probably one of the main reasons why buildings such as shopping precincts, offices and schools use suspended ceilings, so that maintenance can be carried out without being in the full public eye.

There are many different additions that can be added on to suspended ceilings to offer benefits to you and whoever else will see them. Suspended ceilings for example can have lighting added to them and stylish tiles to make them look good as well as brightening up the rooms. There are many different types of lighting that you can get installed, there are even lights that help with heating. The main thing that determines what extras you can have on the suspended ceilings is the tiles that are used in the suspended ceilings. This is because most of the extras will come built in with the tiles, for example for extra insulation that doesn’t take up much room in the ceiling void you can get tiles which come built in with extra insulation.

When thinking about buying suspended ceilings you may want to consider the fire safety aspect to the ceilings, if you feel that it is going to be a issue then you will probably want to get suspended ceilings tiles that are made from mineral fibres or from fire rated wood panels that will keep your suspended ceilings fire proof for a certain period of time if a fire was to break out. These tiles will also bring you up to scratch with any health and safety regulations that you may need to abide by. One of the major reasons why people opt for suspended ceilings is because you can then hide existing pipe work, air ducts or anything else in general that may be being used that you do not wish customers or friends to see as it will make your existing ceilings look tacky. Another reason why many people decide to install suspended ceilings is because you can then run your whole ventilation system in the ceiling void above, allowing for you to fill the room or building with fresh air and not have any air ducts in full plain view. Suspended ceilings are definitely growing in popularity, especially in the commercial industry but always remember that these ceilings can be added to most buildings and will help you in presentation and with anything that may wish to conceal. It will also give you the chances to carry out maintenance when and where necessary.

Suspended Ceilings – What Systems Are There Suspended ceilings are being installed everywhere at the moment and there are many different types of suspended ceilings systems that can be installed into your premises. One of the biggest suspended ceilings companies are called AMF Ceilings, this company have got their own created suspended ceilings systems which they are constantly building on.

In the last few years suspended ceilings have become a lot more popular and it seems that a lot of people are using them to install ventilation shafts or so that they can easily carry out maintenance on the ceiling. Below are a few of the suspended ceilings systems that they create. Concealed Demountable Concealed Non-Demountable

Exposed Free Span Before we go over what some of these systems do, let’s make sure that you know what is meant by suspended ceilings. Suspended ceilings are made up of a metal grid that is suspended from the existing ceiling so that it stays in place and then tiles are put into the grid to make up the ceiling. This means that there is a space above the metal grid so that you can carry out maintenance or add additions to help your building.

Right now onto what types of suspended ceilings there are, firstly we shall talk about the concealed and demountable. This system is put into place and allows for panels to be demounted allowing full access to the ceiling void above, this is a good choice if you are looking to put a ventilation system in or anything like that, and this system also gives your suspended ceilings a smooth monolithic appearance.

This is created because all of the metal suspension components will be concealed therefore giving a smooth, nice looking ceiling. This system can also be created in a non demountable way, these types of suspended ceiling do not allow you room so that you can carry out easy maintenance. The next system is the exposed suspended ceilings system, this system uses a popular exposed suspension grid which adds to the design, and square edged panels are then slotted into the grid. These suspended ceilings are popular because they allow for a lot of creativity to be used with the designs as you can put different tiles or additions to tiles into the grid easily and as the grid is exposed you can add onto the design with this as well. Suspended ceilings with this type of system added also allow for easy maintenance and also another really good reason why these are installed quite a lot is because they are quick and easy to install. Another of the suspended ceilings systems are used a lot is the Free Span corridor system. This is a system that is mainly installed into corridors as it is this easiest and best design to be placed in places such as a corridor. Suspended ceilings of this type have ceiling planks supported on their short edges by the perimeter trim. These basically go across the ceilings giving a smooth, monolithic look. These types of ceiling can be made mountable or demountable and can offer very easy maintenance access if you wish to have access. These suspended ceilings are easy to install hence why a lot of people use them. Above you have seen a few of the systems that AMF offer I would definitely recommend using their systems as they are so professional and their systems are great.
A few grids, some ceiling panels, a few wires and some elbow grease is all it takes to install drop ceilings. If you still have questions, then read on…

How to Install Drop Ceilings I feel every person has dormant creativity residing in him/her and sometimes it only takes a simple incident to bring out that spark!

I begin this article with the above line because I feel that home improvements and decorations that are done by the people who inhabit the house reveal their identity. So go ahead and learn the process of installing drop ceilings.

A drop ceiling What is it? This ceiling is composed of a metal grid and ceiling panels that are placed in that grid. They are often composed of translucent materials that cause an overall glow from the ceiling. The sizes of the drop ceiling panels vary.

The most common size that is available is 2 feet by 4 feet. Light fixtures can also be covered using drop ceilings. Today there are drop-ceiling tiles available too. These tiles come in many textures and colors, ensuring that you have a ceiling treatment that matches your d cor. Benefits of Drop Ceilings Drop ceilings are a good choice of ceiling treatment for many reasons; some of them have been listed below. * Efficient and Cost-Effective Drop ceilings can be used in a basement or laundry room because they are more practical. The reason for this is that drop ceilings do not consist of much construction and the materials that are used are economical. * Provide Sound Control These ceilings score above concrete ceilings because of the property of being able to soak up residual noise.

Drop ceilings have this feature because they are made up of fibers, which are terrific acoustical absorbers. * Provide Cover-up For Faults Despite the fact that drop ceilings are used to conceal unsightly pipes and electrical wiring, they do allow easy access to the equipment too. To reach the equipment all you need to do is lift the panel provided. * Provide Leveling A drop ceiling can be used to correct any leveling problems. This is possible as the metal grids can easily be adjusted to different heights as they are installed. How to Install Drop Ceilings

Here are the steps that will help you install a drop ceiling: * First of all it is important to decide on the style of the drop ceiling that you would like to use. Once you have done that decide on how many drop ceiling panels you will require. * Now center the panels within the room ensuring that the perimeter panels are of equal size as possible. * After the above process, it is important that you figure out how to install the drop ceiling. Remember that the minimum ceiling height that is required is 7 feet 6 inches. Also note that the drop ceiling needs to be installed at least 5 inches below any lights and three inches below any plumbing. * Once the above process is over, install your drop ceiling perpendicular to the joints; to do this you can follow the manufactures instructions. The common process that is followed for installation usually requires eyehooks to the joists and a wire that is used to hang if from the ceiling. While installing the ceiling, ensure that you are using the recommended type of hardware and wire. * Use tin snips to cut long pieces of wire and then make sure that all intersections in the grid are carefully secured. You can use a level to ensure that the drop ceiling is not being installed at an angle. * Place the panels into place after the installation of the grid. To fit the space, cut the perimeter panels into place (note that the actual panels are a little larger then the hole in the grid). Tips * All you need to do to ensure that the panels are equal in size and the number of panels you have calculated are right, draw a diagram of your ceiling on graph paper. While doing do remember to use a box to equal one square foot. When that is complete, draw the panel system onto your diagram. * You would be required to keep a saw handy to cut other panels apart from soft, absorbent and drywall panels. * If you are unable to procure the proper equipment or cannot cut it yourself, you could take the panels to the nearest home improvement store. Most of them will cut it for free. I would like to end by informing you that there are times when installing a drop ceiling becomes difficult because of awkward angels and the use of ladders. It is advisable to call a professional if you are uncomfortable with the task.

Suspended Ceilings – Why Should You Install Them Is your existing ceiling looking damaged and cluttered with pipe works and wires?

Well why don’t you think about getting suspended ceilings installed? What are suspended ceilings? Well if this is what you are saying then read on to find out. Suspended ceilings are like an extension to your existing ceiling, they are built up of a grid made of metal which is suspended from the existing ceiling by a set of wires. Once the grid is set up, tile panels are placed into metal channels in the grid, they all fit into place and make the ceiling solid and in place. This is what suspended ceilings are made up of, you will usually see ceilings like this placed in big offices or buildings as such to hide all their air ducts and wiring etc.

There are plenty of reasons why you should choose to install suspended ceilings over other types, read on to find out what these are. Suspended ceilings are typically installed to cover up air ducts, piping, wires and any other objects that are cluttering up the ceiling areas. Other reasons for installing suspended ceilings include sound absorption, insulation and levelling.

Suspended ceilings have come a long way since they first started being used and now a main reason why they are installed is for sound absorption, there are a lot of different tiles that you can put into the grid that are brilliant for sound control. If the room is going to be loud and you do not want the sound travelling far then these sorts of tiles will suck all the sound in making your room practically sound proof.

Also you may find that you want to add some insulation to your ceiling as there is now a ceiling void above you, there are a few things that you can use in you suspended ceilings to offer more insulation including foam but there are also special tiles that you can buy which will provide all the insulation you need. The next reason for installing suspended ceilings is to help with levelling; if you have an uneven ceiling existing at the moment then you can add a suspended ceiling which can be easily changed so that the ceiling is level.

All you need to do is get the grid adjusted on installation to the correct height you want. Suspended ceilings are great in this way that they can be adjusted to practically any height. Once you have your suspended ceilings installed you don’t have to be stuck with a completely closed ceiling of white panels, oh no, you can do so much with the panels and add in what you like, read on for a few examples. You could add in fluorescent light panels that will give you light, these come in so many different varieties you will have problems deciding which ones you want, you don’t have to install the fluorescent lights only, you can add other methods of light as long as they are securely attached to the grid. Next suspended ceilings can be changed from just white; you can get panels with all sorts of designs, colours and shapes on that will brighten up your room. If you are going to paint your tiles then you should make sure that you use latex paint to get a professional and decent finish.
Here you will find helpful reviews, informative information and tips and much more. This site is in the format of a ‘weblog’ so that each time I post new information, it will come to the top of the front page. This means that you can check back here frequently to see new updates to the information found here.

You can navigate through the site by using the menus on the sides of the page. Also don’t hesitate to follow the links you see in bold throughout each post to learn more about the product being spoken about.

I hope you find the information I provide valuable and helpful.
